For this you need to be using 'styles' in your word processing. Have you noticed the word 'Normal' hanging about in the toolbar/palate area? That's because most text is 'Normal'. But select from that list and you can have all kinds of styles of text. But there's more: choosing a 'Heading' does not just set the font size. You're also flagging that text as a heading. So, when you ask the computer to create a table of contents, it will go looking for these lines you've made into headings. We could get really fancy and talk about different levels of headings, but I'll let you explore.
I just wanted to add that, if you move text about, you'll want to update the table of contents. If you dont see it elsewhere, right-clicking on the table of contents should get you that option.
This is easy enough if you have each reference in a single paragraph.
Then just select the reference list and hit the 'A-Z' button.
Easy? Easy.
Linking to articles from this publisher can use the URL in the address bar. There are also many linking options on the article's page, including a DOI number.

Probably you're going to get asked to write something with someone else. Here are some viable options which make sharing stuff fairly easy. You will need to choose a combination of:

http://docs.google.com - share docs, presentations, spreadsheets
http://www.zotero.org - share your references, build a collaborative knowledge repository. Add tags and notes to stored items to make it easy to find information and comments later.
http://www.blogger.com - start a private blog and add the collaborators as members
http://www.skype.com - be aware of when your team are online and speak to them via a full range of sametime communication tools
http://www.facebook.com - yes FB. Create a private group - be aware of their presence, find out more about your group members. Assuming they all use it, Why not?
http://typewith.me (or any other such ''etherpad'' tool) - for typing at the same time as others. VERY easy to use/share (copy the link and you're in), extreme versioning, chat window included. Ideal for thrashing out the wording of individual sentences.

The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) system is for identifying any digital content. It works a bit like ISBN's does for books. The major publishers provide a DOI number with every new journal article. This number follows a strict syntax so that it will always return the exact journal article, whichever publisher provides it.
For example, the Journal of Advanced Nursing, accessed through IngentaConnect or [[Wiley Interscience]] lists the DOI number with every article.
How would you locate the following reference?
Gillespie, B.M. et al., 2009. Operating theatre nurses' perceptions of competence: a focus group study. Journal of Advanced Nursing, 65(5), 1019-1028
#You could google it, and worm your way to the full text (unless you've set up [[Google Scholar Library Links|http://scholar.google.com/intl/en/scholar/librarylinks.html]]).
#You could visit the e-journals or library catalogue page, search for the journal, navigate to the year/number/page... Or,
#You could simply click on the following link http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/j.1365-2648.2008.04955.x
To create DOI permalinks, just add the DOI number to the end of this: """http://dx.doi.org/""" It is best to do this using 'Notepad' because it does not automatically detect and create hyperlinks.
So, now you can locate the article, but you will then have to find a way of getting full access to it. Locating the correct login box can be very difficult. The 'Off-campus access' page at http://www.cf.ac.uk/insrv/eresources/offcampus/index.html may help.
If sharing your link with your peers or a tutor at Cardiff University, please also add """http://abc.cardiff.ac.uk/login?url=""" to the front of it, (i.e. as well as the """http://dx.doi.org"""). This extra part of the address will cause a login box to appear, taking the marker directly to the full text with minimal fuss. So the full address for the paper cited above would be:

Find the article you want and look around the webpage for 'linking options' or a [[DOI number|Digital Object Identifier system]]. ''It is not usually safe to use the URL in the address bar of your browser''.

There are generally two kinds of links. One type will locate the article, leaving your readers to work out how to get the full text of it without having to pay (all this would be a lot simpler if journals were free, like JMIR (see http://www.jmir.org/). The second will take readers, after a login, directly to the full text of the article. It is the second type that you should provide to markers in your assignments.
To create a link like this, using copy and paste (never attempt to type it!), copy the article permalink from the publisher's website (right-click on the permalink and select 'Copy shortcut' or select/copy the link text but ''not'' from the address bar) and paste it into a simple text editor like 'Notepad'. It is easier to create the link using a very simple text editor (like notepad) which does not make hyperlinks automatically. Add it to the 'referring address':

Please note that there are no spaces in Web addresses. Also, as you may have noticed, entering a hyperlink in Word will cause it to make the hyperlink 'active', once you press the space or enter keys - do this only once you have pasted the complete link into your essay, or wherever you are keeping your references. You should test that this hyperlink works.

[[ATHENS|http://www.athens.ac.uk/]], (the previous way of logging in to access full-text) is no longer used by Cardiff Unvirsity, and many others. Cardiff has led the UK in developing a newer system. When you try and access an online resource, the publisher will check with the University if you should access what you were after. In the changeover from ATHENS, just finding the correct login box has been confusing! You (may still) have to click on words like 'Athens Login', and then 'Alternative Login', and then search for your University...
From August 2009 It has been possible to force web-browsers to go direct to the institution's login box and thence on to the article.

For IngentaConnect, look for the Tools box on the right of their screen. Click on 'Linking options'. You can right-click any of the three offered, ingentaconnect, OpenURL or DOI, and select 'Copy Shortcut' or 'Copy Link Location'. Then 'paste' your permalink into a word-processor document.

The problem of broken links has been with the web for a long time and various attempts have been made to resolve it (for example, each item in this website has a 'permalink'). This has been happening with with online journal articles and the databases that help us find them.
Permalinks are the best way to keep track of or share the article with others for a number of reasons:
#You don’t breach copyright
#You don’t clog up your storage (email or hard disk) with files you don’t need
#A link to the article is easier to manage than the article itself
#Permanent links don’t tend to break
#A link to the article is easy to share - just copy and paste
There are some drawbacks though:
#Different publishers have different methods of providing links
#When publishers re-organise their content, the link may be severed
#The [[DOI system|Digital Object Identifier system]] provides a very enduring link but not all journals are covered by this

I can understand (a bit) why people are reluctant to go over to using some unknown bit of software to handle the joy that adding citations to an article is... Mostly this is inertia or blind panic. Fact is that Zotero is well worth getting to know. You can add items from Amazon and bibliographic databases with one click in the Firefox addressbar. Oh, did I say you need Firefox for this? You need Firefox for this currently. Soon we will have Zotero Stand Alone version and then you'll be able to use it with lots of different web browsers. So Zotero plugs into Firefox, but dont worry, you will not need a degree in computing to accomplish this feat.

I've had a few queries from students, asking why a link worked in the past but doesnt work afterwards. To resolve this I really need to see the link and the full citation being used. However, the prime suspect is that something has been lost in the process of making the link. Here's an example:

Here is the link I need to enter before the number: http://dx.doi.org/
So why doesnt this http://dx.doi.org10.1111/j.1365-2702.2008.02331.x work?
Somehow the / (forward-slash) has been missed out in the process of combining these two parts to make the full hyperlink!
The correct address is http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/j.1365-2702.2008.02331.x

Linking to articles from this publisher is easy - just look for the chain icon in the top right of the article page. Clicking on that will bring up a list of linking options. Avoid using the link for the journal alone, use the one that takes you straight to the article within the journal.
